Background of the Study
Automated translation systems have become essential tools in a globalized world, particularly in multilingual urban centers like Lagos. Yoruba–English translation is of particular interest due to the widespread use of both languages in everyday communication, commerce, and education. Recent developments in automated translation have yielded promising results for major language pairs; however, the Yoruba language, with its rich idiomatic expressions and tonal subtleties, continues to present unique challenges (Ola, 2023). This study investigates the accuracy of automated translation systems for Yoruba–English language pairs, focusing on their ability to handle the complex syntactic structures and cultural contexts embedded in Yoruba texts. With the increasing reliance on digital translation tools, ensuring the fidelity of translations is crucial for effective communication and information dissemination (Adeyemi, 2024). The research will examine translation outputs across various domains, assessing both strengths and limitations to inform future improvements.

Statement of the Problem
Although automated translation systems have advanced considerably, those designed for Yoruba–English often struggle with idiomatic expressions and tonal nuances, resulting in translations that lack cultural accuracy and clarity (Ola, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024). This shortfall impacts various sectors, including education and commerce, where precise communication is critical. The current technological limitations necessitate a thorough evaluation to determine the extent of inaccuracies and to develop strategies for enhancing translation quality for Yoruba–English pairs.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the translation accuracy of automated systems for Yoruba–English language pairs.
  2. To identify linguistic challenges that contribute to translation inaccuracies.
  3. To propose recommendations for improving automated translation models for Yoruba–English.

Research Questions

  1. How accurate are current automated translation systems for Yoruba–English pairs?
  2. What linguistic challenges most significantly affect translation quality?
  3. How can these translation systems be improved to better capture Yoruba nuances?

Significance of the Study
This study will provide essential insights into the performance of automated translation systems for Yoruba–English language pairs in Lagos. Its findings will contribute to the development of more accurate translation tools, supporting better communication and integration in a multilingual urban context. The study benefits linguists, technologists, and policymakers by informing future improvements in translation technology.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to assessing automated translation accuracy for Yoruba–English language pairs in Lagos. It does not extend to other language pairs or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Automated Translation: The use of computer algorithms to convert text from one language to another.
  2. Tonal Nuances: Variations in pitch that affect meaning in tonal languages like Yoruba.
  3. Language Pair: Two languages used in translation, in this case, Yoruba and English.
